Dexterous fingers and a keen eye for detail are important on this course, as well as lots of patience.
The initial 4 to 5 weeks will involve learning the essential skills to enable students to progress and complete finished work. In order, these skills are:- Scoring and breaking, grinding, foiling and soldering. Each will be demonstrated, and then practised by the students. Returning students will have an opportunity to refresh some or all of these techniques during this period.
The first project is a small sun catcher with 4 to 6 pieces, enabling students to practise all four skills and have a finished piece relatively quickly. Tool maintenance and safe working practises will be discussed throughout the term.
Demonstrations of 3D building techniques will follow at around week 5 or 6 and students may tackle this as a project after their sun catcher is complete if they wish.
As class tutor I encourage a friendly and supportive atmosphere and I aim to cover the needs of the group as well as individual design requirements. Glass is a very addictive medium to work in - you have been warned!
Equipment listLouise Nelson will bring along copper foil and solder and a small amount of clear practise glass and some basic coloured glass to purchase on the night. I would advise students to go online to see what is available or visit Pearsons, they have a huge selection of glass.
Fees include an additional charge of £10 for the use of and wear and tear of equipment and sundries.
