INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY: The Big Questions

This new course will present an introduction to some of philosophy's biggest questions; those that we face in our everyday lives, but seldom have time and opportunity to seek answers to. The course will attend to a diverse range of subjects within philosophy, beginning with moral philosophy, discussing the debates regarding capital punishment and euthanasia. Two sessions will address key issues in epistemology, asking what knowledge is, and whether reality is as we perceive it to be. In religious philosophy we will examine arguably the biggest of all questions: Does God exist, and if he does, why is there evil in the world? After this one session will focus on the political theories regarding when it is right to go to war, and how we ought to act once engaged in battle. The latter two weeks of the course will be concerned with issues in metaphysics. First of all we will ask whether we have free will, or are at the mercy of fate? Secondly, a discussion regarding personal identity will be presented, asking what makes a person, a person?
